Derek Milen was born in Regina Saskatchewan and attended Luther College there before taking his undergraduate degree at the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus). He has three grown sons. He and his wife Janice own thoroughbreds and are avid fans of thoroughbred racing. In 2007, Derek's horse 'Footprint' won the Canadian Derby.
